Is Spinal Decompression Painful?

Written By Caputo Chiropractic Center on February 17, 2020

Spinal decompression therapy is an approach that relies on natural principles of physics and gravity to bring about lasting relief. Caputo Chiropractic Center regularly recommends spinal decompression therapy to help relieve the debilitating pain of herniated and bulging discs.

Ideal for long-term relief, spinal decompression therapy is highly effective in combating pain and soreness associated with heavy lifting or a sports-related injury – all without invasive surgery or risky narcotic pain medication.

What Is Spinal Decompression?

In short, spinal decompression therapy is a series of positional stretches designed to relieve pain caused by misaligned vertebrae, which impose unnatural pressure on sensitive nerve endings and cause extreme pain.

The process involves an apparatus known as a “traction table,” which allows patients to comfortably lie while the equipment gently stretches the spine. These delicate stretches work to alleviate the pressure building up on those sensitive nerves and allow the spine to sit in its proper place.

Is the Process Uncomfortable?

For patients in excruciating pain, spinal decompression involves nothing more than a series of stretches and position changes – all of which are aimed at eliminating the pulsating discomfort of a herniated disc. While getting positioned on the table may be mildly uncomfortable, most of our patients report a decrease in pain within a short period after the therapeutic session.

While the most stubborn herniated discs may take several sessions to resolve, spinal decompression is not a painful or difficult experience. Spinal decompression also helps increase blood flow and oxygenation to affected areas – which is especially helpful for patients experiencing degeneration of lumbar tissue.
